What is Excel MCP?
The Excel MCP server gives AI agents read and write access to your Microsoft Excel workbooks in OneDrive and SharePoint. That means agents can search for workbooks, read a range of cells, write values back, append and update rows, and build structured tables, all through the Microsoft Graph API. It connects to the spreadsheets your team already keeps in Microsoft 365, so an agent can update a tracker or pull numbers out of a report instead of waiting on someone to open the file.
Anyone who lives in spreadsheets knows the busywork: opening a workbook to paste in this week’s numbers, hunting for the right row to update, and re-keying data from one tool into another. The Excel MCP server hands those tasks to an AI agent that can find the workbook, read the range, write the values, and add the row. Describe what you need, and your AI agent will update the spreadsheet for you.
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open standard that lets AI agents call external tools. Normally, working with Excel through the Microsoft Graph API means registering an Entra ID app, requesting the right scopes, and refreshing access tokens on your own. Gumloop wraps all of that behind a hosted server: authorize your Microsoft account once. After that, you can read cells, write rows, and manage tables just by asking your AI agent to do it for you, in plain language.

What you can do with Excel MCP on Gumloop
Find workbooks across OneDrive and SharePoint
Search for .xlsx workbooks by keyword, so an agent can locate the right file without needing a file ID up front.
Create workbooks and worksheets
Create a new workbook in a OneDrive or SharePoint folder, and add worksheets to an existing workbook.
Read any range of cells
Pull the values from a worksheet’s used range or a specific range such as A1:D10.
Write values to cells
Update any cell range with a grid of values, so an agent can populate a report or fill in results.
Work with rows
Append a row, find a row by a column value, update a row by its index, or delete a row. A find-or-create option inserts a row only when a matching one does not already exist, which is handy for deduplication.
Build and manage tables
Turn a range into a structured Excel table, list tables and their rows, add a column, and remove a table when it is no longer needed.
Download a workbook
Get a download URL for any workbook in your Microsoft storage.
Work across OneDrive and SharePoint
The server detects whether your files live in OneDrive or SharePoint and adapts automatically.

Excel MCP use cases
Populate recurring reports for ops teams
An agent pulls this period’s numbers from another system, writes them into the right range, and appends a summary row, so the weekly workbook updates itself.
Deduplicate records for RevOps
Using find-or-create, an agent looks up a row by email or account ID and inserts it only if it is missing, keeping a tracker clean without manual checks.
Extract spreadsheet data for analysts
An agent reads a range from a workbook, summarizes the figures, and posts the recap to Slack or a Google Doc, chaining Excel with the rest of your stack.
Log intake into a worksheet
When a request arrives by email or form, an agent appends a row with the details, so every submission lands in the spreadsheet automatically.
Stand up a tracker for project managers
An agent creates a workbook, adds a worksheet, and builds a structured table with headers, so a new tracker is ready to fill in one run.
