“Opendoor exists to tilt the world in favor of homeowners by making homeownership simpler, faster, and fairer for everyone.” AI agents are a growing part of how Opendoor delivers on that mission.
A core part of Opendoor’s operations is buying, renovating and reselling hundreds of homes a week. Every home needs water, gas and electricity turned on, one provider at a time. With a Gumloop browser agent connected to Opendoor’s inbox and internal systems, the team now has a clear roadmap to automating a substantial amount of this work.
The Problem
If you’ve ever bought a home in America, you know how tedious setting up utilities can be. It’s frustrating enough to do once, let alone thousands of times a year.
A home’s utilities need to be turned on before any renovation can start. Any delay pushes back renovations and prevents excited homeowners from moving in.
Some providers require a phone call to get instructions, some prefer email, some like uploaded files in a portal, some send payment links. Some are private companies, others are municipal.
Opendoor’s AI Operations team had already built agents for each channel, including an AI phone agent and email automation. The final piece of the puzzle was reliable browser automation.
To make browser automation work at Opendoor’s volume, the team needed four things:
- Agents that run in the cloud, so hundreds of turn-ons can run in parallel without tying up anyone’s laptop.
- One shared set of rules and skills, so a fix one person makes applies to the whole team.
- Fast iteration, since every provider portal works differently.
- Freedom to choose the right model for each task, to balance performance and cost.
The Solution
Opendoor joined Gumloop’s browser agent beta and built on it as both the orchestration layer and the browser infrastructure for utilities. In four days, the team went from kickoff to an agent wired into its OpsHub MCP, password vault and Snowflake.
How Opendoor built it. The team designed the system around the browser:
- A provider catalog the agent reads before every turn-on and updates after, so each attempt makes the next one smarter.
- Handoffs to Opendoor’s AI phone agent when a provider requires a call.
- Email follow-up from a shared utilities inbox to confirm and close out each case.
- Dozens of agent sessions running in parallel through Gumloop’s SDK and CLI.
“Gumloop gave us the orchestration layer we were missing, and the browser harness is really good.”
A few features in particular help the team iterate quickly:
Secure credentials. Logins stay in Opendoor’s 1Password vault and the agent retrieves them securely, so no one shares passwords or stops to handle logins.
An always-on cloud. Operations run on Gumloop in the cloud. The team can kick off the agent run from the Gumloop web app, Slack, email, or even Claude Code/Codex and have it run in the background while they do other work.
Centralized skills. Provider instructions live in one shared agent instead of on one teammate's laptop. A fix one person makes applies to everyone.
Centralized access. The agent pulls verification codes from Gmail, ownership documents from Snowflake and task data through Opendoor’s OpsHub MCP.
“Browser is never in a silo. It's one part of a bigger process, and it works really well in the cloud.”
Opendoor is innovating as quickly as any company we’ve ever worked with. Gumloop agents will play a significant role in helping people move into their next home faster.
