What is Exa MCP?

The Exa MCP server gives AI agents access to Exa’s AI-native web search and research API. That means agents can run neural, keyword, and hybrid web searches, pull full page contents with highlights and summaries, find pages similar to a given URL, get LLM-generated answers backed by citations, and launch asynchronous deep-research tasks that gather and synthesize sources from across the web. Every result comes back inline as clean, LLM-ready data, so an agent can search the live web and act on what it finds in the same run.

If your team spends time digging through search results, copying page text into documents, chasing down sources for a research summaries, or stitching together findings by hand, an AI agent can take over a lot of that work. Describe what you need, and your AI agent will handle the research for you.

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It’s an open standard that gives AI agents a way to connect to external tools and services. Instead of coding against the Exa API, managing an API key, and parsing JSON responses yourself, you connect Exa to Gumloop once. The connection is built in, so there’s nothing to set up to get started. After that, you can search the web and run deep research just by chatting with your AI agent.

What you can do with Exa MCP on Gumloop

  • Run neural, keyword, and hybrid web search

Search the live web with Exa’s neural model, classic keyword matching, or a hybrid of both, and optionally pull text, highlights, or summaries with each result. Pagination lets an agent work through deeper result sets when one page isn’t enough.

  • Pull clean, LLM-ready page content

Give Exa a list of URLs and get back full page contents, summaries, and metadata. Results come from Exa’s cache instantly, with a live-crawl fallback when a page isn’t cached yet.

  • Get cited answers to a question

Ask a question and Exa returns an answer informed by its search results. You get a direct answer for specific queries, or a cited summary for open-ended ones, so an agent can ground its response in real sources.

  • Find pages similar to a URL

Point Exa at a page you like and get neural similarity results that surface related content. This is useful for discovering competitors, comparable articles, or adjacent sources, with pagination for wider discovery.

  • Launch asynchronous deep-research tasks

Kick off an Exa research task that explores the web, gathers sources, and synthesizes findings with citations. The task runs remotely on Exa and returns a research ID right away, so an agent can move on while the research runs.

  • Poll and retrieve research results

Check the status of a research task and pull its results once it completes, including the synthesized findings and citations. An agent can wait for a task to finish, then hand the output straight into the next step.

Exa MCP use cases

Competitive research for marketing teams

A marketer asks an agent to track how competitors are positioning a new feature. The agent runs an Exa search across the web, uses find_similar to surface comparable pages, pulls the key content with get_contents, and writes a tidy summary into Google Sheets for the team to review.

Market and industry research for analysts

An analyst needs a briefing on an emerging market. The agent launches an Exa deep-research task, waits for it to complete, retrieves the synthesized findings with citations, and drops a sourced summary into a Google Doc, so the analyst starts from real evidence instead of a blank page.

Grounded answers for AI builders

A team building a RAG application needs fresh, citable context. An agent calls Exa’s answer tool to get a cited response, then uses get_contents to pull the underlying pages as clean, LLM-ready text, feeding both into the application’s knowledge base without any manual scraping.

Prospect and account enrichment for RevOps

A RevOps team wants context on a list of target accounts. For each company, an agent runs an Exa search for recent news and announcements, pulls the most relevant pages, and appends a short, sourced brief to the account row in Google Sheets, so reps walk into calls informed.

Content and SEO research for content teams

A content team is planning a new piece. An agent searches Exa for the top-ranking and most-cited sources on a topic, uses find_similar to round out the landscape, summarizes the angles with get_contents, and posts the research digest to a Slack channel for the writers.
